Parent company owning Ricki's and Cleo's have declared bankruptcy so doubtful they will be awarding prizes. (Online notice said gift cards are no longer redeemable.)

Yes, it's a reminder about holding onto gift cards or giving them to people who might not use them. If the company goes out of business or changes ownership, the value can be lost and if people don't use the cards then the money is wasted. Cash is king/queen. It's usable almost anywhere or can at least be deposited into the bank.
